While the seated figure isn’t by any means a new art genre this artwork tries to blur the boundaries between figure/expressiveness and abstraction. I guess you could refer to a more styalised or minimal approach also.
The brush strokes suggesting movement and depth or space. They also define the body with form – especially for example on the front thigh on the left.
The collage too provides visual interest, part figure, part tone.
Great conversation last night at the Art Gallery New South Wales for the NUDE exhibition. Kathy Lette interviewed by Fenella Kernebone. Of course irreverent and controversial but also humorous and to the bone.
References to the lack of male nudes in art galleries generally and the over representation of female nudes in art but the under -representation of female artists.
